Research at the ICN is focused around 4 core themes:

Microscope Delivery of chemical reagents directly to nanoscopic regions of a target substrate by Tip-based Nanolithography

  • Physical properties of nanostructures.
  • Chemical properties of nanostructured functional materials and devices.
  • Nanobiosensors.
  • Scanning probes, electron microscopy and synchrotron radiation spectroscopy.

The multi-disciplinary research team, representing some 27 nationalities, is divided into major Research Groups. Each Research Group is led by a senior scientist and supported by laboratory engineers, technical and administrative staff. A number of specialised technical divisions both conduct research into new instrumentation and techniques whilst providing services to ICN and external research groups.

Focused on excellence at an international level, the ICN is ranked amongst the top Spanish research institutes in funding awarded by the EU FP7 competitive research program. Its senior research scientists hail from around the world and are holders of numerous prestigious grants and awards.

ICN researchers publish in high impact journals such as Science, Nature, Nature Materials, Nature Nanotechnology, Chemical Reviews, Physical Review Letters, Angewandte Chemie, nano Letters, amongst others. Reserach troups of the ICN also regularly collaborate with other well-respected European and American centres of excellence, such as the Max Planck Society, MIT, CNRS, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and others.

In addition to its Core Research Groups, the ICN has a number of Support and Development Divisions offering highly specialised technical services both internally and to external users.  The ICN also has a number of researchers working collaboratively with CSIC research groups under the CIN2 collaboration, and with LEITAT under the CNBSS initiative.
